I wasn’t entirely sure what I was going to listen to after almost 2 weeks of completely slacking on this project, due to a vacation and then a heavy work week. (Even though I also posted Fitz and the Tantrums today I actually listened to it 12 days ago.)Β I was watching a random YouTube video and they made some passing reference to ZZ Top, and that’s how I decided what I’d listen to today. I loaded their discography on Wikipedia and didn’t even read past “ZZ Top’s First Album” before deciding with an album name that ridiculous, I had to listen to it.
I really enjoyed listening to this record. It was exactly the kind of dirty blues I was expecting. It sounded an awful lot like Lynyrd Skynyrd, which shouldn’t have been that surprising to me, but it was so similar that I think if the album was playing and I had to guess the group, I’d have guessed wrong.
The real stand-out track for me on ZZ Top’s First Album was definitely Brown Sugar, particularly the surprisingly minimalist beginning. I don’t think I’d heard any of these tracks before, but they were all a lot of fun.
