I was in the car yesterday and caught the tail end of a song that the DJ said was Spoon but that I didn’t recognize. I thought their latest album was 2014’s They Want My Soul, but it turns out they just released Hot Thoughts less than a month ago. I was very excited to hear it. Spoon has been one of my favorite bands since college.
I was supremely disappointed with Hot Thoughts. Most of the songs were fine, I guess, but I thought they mostly sounded a lot more like OK Go than Spoon. Apparently one of the band members left after the tour for They Want My Soul. Additionally, someone involved with Flaming Lips helped make Hot Thoughts. I think those two things must be why it sounded so different. I can’t think of a single song that I thought sounded anything like their previous work. I realize that isn’t an inherently bad thing, but I love their previous work. Of all the tracks on this album, I liked Us the least. I noted while I was listening to it that it sounded more like it belonged in the original Lethal Weapon soundtrack than on a Spoon album.
