Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of Biggie Smalls’ murder, and as soon as I saw #RIPBIG trending on Twitter, I decided that this is what’d I’d listen to. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to listen to it before my parents lost internet at their house at 4:30 yesterday afternoon. I also don’t get cell service there, so I never got a chance to listen to anything yesterday. I had to listen to the album today in a coffee shop where I had to go in order to clock in to work.
I wanted to like this album, but I really didn’t. I find Gangsta Rap boring. It’s rampant with false bravado, immaturity, and sexism which makes it completely uninteresting to me. This album is a perfect example of that. I think the track I liked most was Respect, until the end when it degraded into a sketch of make-out noises that was extremely unpleasant. But at least it was better than Fuck Me (Interlude) which was basically porn without video. I will say, though, that while I found the sketches and lyrics unpalatable, I was really impressed with the music. I liked it a lot more than I was expecting.
