Yet again, I was inspired to listen to this album because of something I heard on NPR. Although this time I was on my way home from buying donuts, rather than heading to/from the gym. I don’t remember what program was on but they were discussing Bill Evans, the pianist and co-writer of two of the songs on this album, with the director of a documentary about him. At some point, either the director or the show’s host mentioned that Kind of Blue is the best selling jazz album of all time.
I have to admit that some time during Freddie Freeloader I found myself a little surprised by this. Not by any stretch because this album is bad, but because it didn’t seem that good. And then Blue in Green came on and I got goosebumps when Miles comes in at the beginning. Apparently there is some dispute over whether it’s actually the best selling album of all time, but it is still certified quadruple platinum (4 million copies sold), and damn but it’s good.
I think the only Miles Davis I’ve ever sat down and actively listened to before today was Bitches Brew, so I was really surprised at the subtlety of this record. I will definitely listen to Kind of Blue again, and I will almost certainly be listening to more Miles Davis for this project. I think I’ll also try to find some Bill Evans records if there are any.
There are many Bill Evans albums but you want to start with ‘Sunday at the Village Vanguard’ and ‘Waltz For Debbie’. If you can get a copy of ‘Portrait In Jazz’ that is also excellent. Enjoy!
