I burned myself out but good on Electronic music, so I was already looking for a big shift in genre yesterday while I was listening to Mezzanine. Then Teardrop came on and immediately I knew what I’d listen to next.

Track 5 on this album is a cover of Massive Attack’s Teardrop. It’s not often that I prefer a cover to the original song. Every single other instance I can think of where I do, it’s because somehow I knew the cover before the original. José González’ cover of Teardrop is the only instance I can think of where I was familiar with the original song and still prefer the cover. It is astonishingly good and somehow fits in with the rest of this album.

The dulcet tones and astonishing textures this guy can draw out of a guitar is nothing short of awe inspiring. There’s not a bad song on this album. Even though Cycling Trivialities is a little too long at 8 minutes, because it’s the last song on the album you find yourself grateful to get the extra time even though the song sounds like it’s obviously run its course after 5 or so minutes. I love this album and I will definitely be listening to more González through the course of this project.
