How much I’ve seen: Season 1 (everything to date)
You should watch it if you like: Louie, Better Things, Master of None
Where you can stream it: You can’t, unfortunately. At least not as far as I know. FX is really restrictive with its original series, which is a real shame. But this show is so good it’s worth finding a way to watch it even though it isn’t convenient.
Louis CK really blew open the sitcom with Louie. It’s not really a sitcom, or even necessarily a comedy. But it’s also not a drama. Sometimes it’s not even an episode so much as a series of vignettes. There are a bunch of shows like this now; not comedies, not dramas. Neither and both. Sit-Drams?
Louie broke the ground, but Donald Glover absolutely mastered this new genre. Of all of these types of shows, Atlanta is easily the best — and the funniest. It manages to do an excellent job of bringing me into a world I have absolutely no experience in, but also makes it totally approachable. And damn but its funny.
I think the thing that’s most interesting to me about it though, is that even though Glover created, wrote, produced, directed, and stars in the show I think you can make the argument that he’s not really the main character. In fact, there’s at least one episode he’s barely even in; maybe getting 30 seconds of screen time. That episode (S01E06: Value) isn’t even really all that funny… Right up until it’s so funny that it gets more laughs at the tail end than a lot of sitcoms get in the entire 22 minutes. Come to think of it, I don’t think he’s in the next episode much at all either. But it doesn’t matter. That episode might even be funnier.
