I don’t remember the last time I was so pleasantly surprised so quickly into listening to an album. The first time you hear Baby Huey’s voice come in on Listen to Me is a god damned revelation. That dude could wail.

When I sat down to listen to this today, I intended to listen to Kashmere Stage Band, but I found the 32 song, 2+ hour run-time a little daunting. Instead I listened to this. I have a Pandora playlist for the Kashmere Stage Band and Baby Huey gets played fairly often, although after listening to this album I think the only song I’d actually heard before is Mama Get Yourself Together. Given that this is his only album I’m not sure how I remembered it so well. Perhaps it was the memorable cover art.

Even though the album is called “The Living Legend,” the album was releasedΒ after Baby Huey’s death. Given how amazing the vocals are at the front of the album, I was supremely disappointed that most of the second half of the album is instrumental or only backing vocals. Especially since I think there was more source material of Baby Huey singing. At any rate none of the songs on this album are bad, I just found myself missing his voice before the album ended. I will say while I’ve heard several versions of A Change is Going to Come, I’ve never heard one like Baby Huey’s before. This is great right up until it isn’t. His version is over 9 minutes long, which is 3 to 4 too many. I’m not a big fan of talking in the middle (or in this case the end) of a song.

This is an album I’ll come back to again and again. The brass is just incredible, and I’m already jonesing for more of Baby Huey’s voice.
